How to Make Your Friends Obsessed With Music

If you're the sort of person who loves music but your friends don’t, it can make you feel a little lonely. You know what you like, but they don’t seem to be coming along with you for the ride.
So, what should you do in this situation? How can you get them into it?
Here’s some ideas you could try:
Curate A “Life Playlist”
One of the things you could do is to curate a life playlist. The idea here is to provide your friends with a sense of where they are right now.
For example, you could make music that’s all about celebrating a friend with a new baby. Or you could give them some tracks that feel great when driving home long distances on dark evenings. These create associations in their minds that can develop into a love of music.
Introduce Them To A Song That Changes Their Taste
Another thing you can do is find “gateway” songs that change their taste. We probably all have one of these. It’s the song that we listened to that opened up a whole new genre of music we’d never explored before.
What’s nice about this approach is that you can tailor the song to what you think your friend will enjoy. For instance, you could introduce them to jazz, hip-hop, electronica or anything else you think they’d like.
Invite Them To Learn With You
If you’re feeling really adventurous, you could also invite them to group piano lessons. Here, you all learn together, making it more fun than just doing it solo with a teacher.
No, it’s not quite the same, of course, as going out to a bar. But it can be highly effective, especially if you all discover that you have latent talents that you haven’t fully explored.
Make Music A Ritual
You could also explore ways in which you can make music into more of a ritual. For example, if all your friends get together on a Friday night, you could put the music on and sing along. You could also have a juke box where you each choose the tunes you want.
Bridge Genres
Another approach is to bridge genres. The idea here is to mix and combine to make music more interesting.
A lot of people these days aren’t interested in music because they think it essentially all sounds the same. But that’s not what happens when you combine different genres from different times. If you can build in these connections, then it drives curiosity and helps your friends get more into music.
Encourage Them To Create Music
Finally, if you have the right studio setup and software, you can encourage your friends to literally create music. No, they won’t be able to produce anything amazing immediately. But if they continue to plug away at it, then they can actually get quite good.
The nice thing about making music is that it can be done electronically, by playing a musical instrument and recording it, or both.
